Access The creation of "special places" for disabled people can perpetuate segregation. Instead, public places should be designed with the needs of all users in mind. This garden, then, is designed to include everyone. Interpretive information in the Braille Trail allows blind users to explore without depending on the help of others, and benches in the shade provide resting points for less active visitors. Themed plantations full of smells, textures and sounds offer some sensory stimulation for everyone, sighted or not. As so often with well-designed, accessible landscapes, however, the world outside the garden walls is not so meticulously planned with accessibility in mind. |
Navigating beyond the garden may need some advance planning. On the positive side, Campos is a flat city and, beyond the centre, its streets are broad, but pavements are often perilously potholed with thorny, overhanging branches and other obstacles. The links and directions pages have more useful contacts for information on getting to and around Brazil for travellers with disabilities, and on visiting Campos and the Costa Doce (Sweet Coast). |
